KCommunity - India

We just sent out a broadcast meesage to everyone in the community on the participation levels in the community. As you may be seeing, there are a handful of us who participate in discussions in the forum. The access levels are pretty good as the Google Analytics reports show which means people do log in and read stuff. It would be fantastic to have more participants sharing their experiences in the community forums. This would bring in some fresh thinking and we can all learn more from each other.

Please feel free to respond to this thread with any feedback that you have.

Are the topics being discussed inline with what the community in general expects?
Are there new topics where you are looking for help and think the community can add value?
Anything else that you think can improve interactions in the community?

1. Mostly in line except "little" duplication and disconnect among related topics.
2. Not for now. May be later. We need to focus more on depth in some of the shallow threads already triggered.
eg: Eby has triggered many interesting questions some time back but many of them didn't get good responses. I got very good responses for some and some I expect more responses.
Active contributors and new contributors can give life to those threads.
3. Frequent face-to-face meetings (unconference, expert talk, telecon...). We can hear more voice there.
Dinesh,
I would say our community is doing a terrific job. May be we can discus more on your questions in location based KCommunity meets.

Regards
Subash
Subash: Don't be too fast in using great adjectives. Leave some gap for improvement! I like your positive mood and energy.

I think it is better to define KPIs (eg: % of great responses, contributors, beneficiaries). Once we get there, we can call it "terrific" then we can reset the expectations to move up.

Considering this a community of KM practioners and learners, my expectations will be much more than "non-KM" communities. We need to set examples. If our contributors are less than 5%, we can never make people to contribute in our organizations.

1. 50% contributors
2. 80% Users (beneficiaries)
3. 25% great responses (overall thread)
4. Atleast 5 different profile of members (HR, PM, Dedicated KM, IT, one or two industry, Institutions etc.,)
5. One new practice or platform per quarter implemented at work (learning to action)
6. 1000 jobs in KM career in one year from now

- Community must go behond learning.
- Metrics must go beyond Google Analytics.
Lets wait to hear from from fresh voices !!
Considering that I joined very recently, I enjoy the discussions and the friendships in this community. May be at some point of time, we have separate groups looking at unique sectors like "Schools and Education", "Government", "Juidiciary", "Industry & Services", "SMEs" etc.

There would also be need to have face to face meeting of the members on a periodical basis.

Thanks for the opportunity!
Thx for the suggestion Mr.Krishnan. I agree that creating groups around sectors would be a good thing to do. We currently have either subject matter specific groups like "Intellectual Property" or city specific groups. This is something we should definitely consider.
Unconference and expert talks will definitely help. Sharing of best practices by various companies is really a good thing to do. I found the latest Chennai KCommunity meet very useful.I believe that we should work towards meeting once a month or once in 2 months as a group.
People will be more motivated to contribute if they know that their queries will get addressed. Personally I was very happy to see responses for my Specific question on Lean IT & KM.
As Lakshman mentioned some of my questions (& others as well) are still not addressed. We can think about having a group of people (Active Contributors) act as InCharge for making sure that queries are addressed. We can keep rotating this role
Agree Eby..This is probably happening though in a unstructured way..But we can see how we can formalize this..

Lets connect sometime to discuss ...
Sure Dinesh
majority of the topics are interested / applicable to all
the new topics add value to the members and enhaces the thought processes and saves time of again reading and understading by self .
In fact formation of the community it self is a big victory for bringing people together and city meetings , virtual meetings , virtual class rooms and podcast if possible will be very helpful .
bringing personalities like laksman ,tantri alak , and so on to clear doubts.thank u
the community is coming up with quite good discussions. that way, i think not much change required. i am of late thinking about KM from the perspective of non-technology industries ... and i see not much discussion there. but maybe this reflects the way things are ... apart from hi-tech, not many industries taking to KM seriously. unless i am mistaken?
Interesting observation about the industry. They don't call it KM so much. But they care for improvements in communication, learning, productivity etc., in their functions. Our first customer is using it for their insurance process and then they have started using our products & services for their financial (banking) process.

They (99% non IT workforce) don't have much time to look at standalone content base & collaboration systems. They never use the phrase "knowledge sharing". We need to tune to their frequency. They may not take KM seriously but they want improvements in how they do business by leveraging collective knowledge.

When we go beyond the basics, it makes sense to talk about business processes.
